The Library of Chern Institute of Mathematics was established in 1985 by the international mathematician Professor Shiing-Shen Chern. The library was formerly in the Runrun Shaw Building, which was co-funded by the Hong Kong’s famous philanthropist Runrun Shaw who donated 3 million Hong Kong dollars, and the Chinese government which provided 700,000 RMB. In 2005, it was moved to the Shiing-Shen Building which received 129 million RMB from the support of state funds for its construction. The library currently is on the 3rd to 6th floors of the Shiing-Shen Building with a construction area of nearly 4,000 square meters.
Since its foundation, the library has been receiving support and donation from the Chinese government, the Ministry of Education and the whole society. By the end of 2019, the total collection of the library has added up to more than 34,000 volumes, including more than 210 Chinese and foreign current journals, 5,800 electronic journals and 3 self-purchased databases. The library has been sticking to the key principle of providing people-oriented services by offering open access to all resources and setting the management mechanism which combines important services as collecting, retrieving, loaning and reading, in order to create a warm and comfortable reading environment and strong academic atmosphere, and to develop into an open and professional research library servicing the whole mathematical community in China.
