The Library of Chern Institute of Mathematics was established in 1985 by the world-renowned mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern. It was formerly in Run Run Shaw Building co-funded by the Hong Kong famous philanthropist Run Run Shaw, who donated 3 million Hong Kong dollars, and the Chinese government providing 700,000 RMB for the building. In 2005, the CIM library was moved into Shiing-Shen Building which was built with the support of 129 million RMB state funds. The library currently is on the 3rd-5th floors of Shiing-Shen Building.
Since its foundation, the library has been receiving support and donation from the Chinese government, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the whole society. By the end of 2024, the total collection of print resources has added up to more than 79,000 volumes, including over 36,000 books and over 43,000 bound periodicals, with subscriptions of more than 150 current journals in Chinese and foreign languages, 4 databases in use and over 6,500 electronic books. The library has been sticking to the key principle of providing people-oriented services by offering open access to all resources and setting a management mechanism that combines important services including collecting, retrieving, loaning and reading, in order to create a comfortable reading environment and academic atmosphere for the readers, and to become an open and professional research library servicing the whole mathematical community in China.
