News Summary:

On May 17, Prof. Shing-Tung Yau, an internationally renowned mathematician, professor at Harvard University, Director of Yau Mathematical Sciences Center (YMSC) of Tsinghua University, winner of Fields Medal and Wolf Prize, member of the US National Academy of Sciences and foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to give a Chern Lecture at the "Nankai University's Centennial Grand Forum". Before the lecture, Chancellor of Nankai University Qingshan Yang met with Prof. Shing-Tung Yau and presented Prof. Yau with a forum speaker commemorative certificate.

At the beginning of the lecture titled "Geometry of Spacetime and Mass in General Relativity", Prof. Yau said that it happens to be the 50th year since he was admitted to the University of California, Berkeley as a Ph.D. student under the supervision of Prof. Shiing-Shen Chern. Then he started the main topic of the lecture by reviewing the foundation of the theory of general relativity from the mathematical, especially geometrical point of view. The lecture was centred on how Einstein's theory of gravity developed in the decade after the coming out of Einstein Field Equation and how physics was influenced by the development of geometry.

After the lecture, Prof. Yau had discussions with the teachers and students present and answered their questions.
