The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) 28th General Meeting recently ended in the northeastern Italian city of Trieste. Zizhou Tang, professor of the Chern Institute of Mathematics of Nankai University, won the 2019 TWAS Prize in Mathematics, and received the congratulatory letter from TWAS President and member of Chinese Academy of Sciences Chunli Bai.

Founded in November 1983, TWAS has been dedicated to supporting scientific research in the developing world, promoting communication and cooperation among researchers and institutes in developing countries, encouraging scientific research in solving major problems facing the third world countries, and advancing development of basic and applied science in the third world.

Prof. Zizhou Tang is the third winner of the TWAS Prize in Mathematics from the Chern Institute of Mathematics after CAS members Weiping Zhang and Yiming Long. The prize is given to Prof. Zizhou Tang "For his fundamental contributions to differential geometry, including outstanding works in isoparametric theory and harmonic maps."

Over the years Prof. Zizhou Tang has been engaged in research on manifold geometry and topology, especially isoparametric theory and harmonic maps. His research papers were published in international authoritative journals such as Journal of Differential Geometry, Topology, and the comprehensive journal of mathematics J.Reine Angew. Math.. The hornor and awards Prof. Tang has received include National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Outstanding Young Scholar Award of Hong Kong Qiu Shi Science and Technologies Foundation, and the First Prize of the National Award for Natural Sciences as the first accomplisher.
