On June 11, Yiming Long, professor at Chern Institute of Mathematics, Nankai University, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS), was invited to attend the "Nankai University's Centennial Grand Forum" and delivered a lecture titled "To Start with Around the World in 80 Days".
Starting with the famous novel Around the World in 80 Days (French: Le Tour du Monde en 80 Jours) by French science fiction novelist Jules Gabriel Verne, Prof. Yiming Long introduced the mathematical concept "closed geodesic" by taking routes of circumnavigation in the novel as an example, as well as related mathematical theories and stories of renowned mathematicians who have made important contributions to this research field, with the hope that the audiences could learn from these mathematicians about how to create new methods, theories and fields, and how to solve major problems in research. He encouraged the students to keep being curious, lay a good foundation, learn the subjects comprehensively and perseveringly, develop innovative thinking abilities, face up the difficulties in research and spare no efforts on the right path. After the lecture, Prof. Long answered questions and discussed about learning attitude and research methods with the teachers and students present.
