The Mathematics Interdisciplinary Science Center of Nankai University was inaugurated on June 30. The Center will focus its efforts on leveraging the traditional advantages of Nankai's mathematics discipline, highlighting the core topics in basic mathematical research and the interdisciplinary fields of mathematics, data informatics, artificial intelligence, biological medicine, financial actuarial science, etc., working on the integration of theories and applications, and serving the significant strategies and needs of the country.
Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Nankai University Xuetao Cao, Executive Vice President of Nankai University Jingjun Xu, Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professors of Chern Institute of Mathematics Mo-Lin Ge and Weiping Zhang, Director and Executive Vice Director of the NKU Mathematics Interdisciplinary Science Center Chengming Bai and Longyun Ding unveiled the plaque together. Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor of Chern Institute of Mathematics Yiming Long attended the ceremony online.
In his opening remarks, Xuetao Cao said the establishment of the Center is the result of the collective wisdom of experts and scholars of Nankai's mathematics and many other disciplines, and also is another important outcome of the school's efforts on the construction of interdisciplinary science centers as part of the "4211 Action Plan for Nankai of Excellence". Nankai University will offer full support to the Center's construction and development, with the hope that it will target the significant needs of the country, strive to solve the major scientific problems, tap the potential of mathematics for its applications in scientific progress, technological breakthroughs and industrial upgrade, promote interdisciplinary integration and collaboration, and push for continuous emerging of leading and creative Nankai original academic achievements.
When addressing the ceremony, Academician Mo-Lin Ge, Yiming Long and Weiping Zhang expressed their appreciation for the school's strong support to the development of Nankai's mathematics discipline. They hoped the Center will play a leading role in academic research, discipline construction and talent cultivation, keep promoting the integration of mathematics and other disciplines and developing more creative research fields of pure and applied mathematics, make world-class scientific achievements, devote to the development of Chinese mathematics, and make contributions to the national and regional economic and social development.
The Mathematics Interdisciplinary Science Center of Nankai University will target cutting-edge technologies that leads the world and aim for the significant needs of the country. Based on the advantaged research of Nankai's mathematics discipline, it will conduct scientific research in four major fields including the "core problems in basic research", "information theory, coding and cryptology, image processing and artificial intelligence", "protein function prediction and single-cell data analysis" and "mathematical finance and actuarial science". It will strive to make significant accomplishments that are original and of great importance in the field of basic mathematical research, and thus provide theoretical foundation and technological support to the breakthroughs in frontier research and key technologies of the fields of image processing, artificial intelligence, information security, mathematical finance and actuarial science and protein function prediction. Meanwhile, the Center will also gather renowned scientific talents in cutting-edge interdisciplinary fields, build new interdisciplinary scientific systems, and endeavor to become a hub of interdisciplinary research in mathematics and its applications.
At the following Workshop on Mathematics and its Applications, Professor of the School of Mathematical Sciences of NKU Su Gao, Professor of the School of Statistics and Date Science of NKU Zhaojun Wang, Professor of the School of Mathematical Sciences of NKU Wenchang Sun and Professor of the School of Mathematical Sciences of Beihang University Deren Han each delivered a keynote lecture respectively titled "Descriptive set theory", "Activation discovery with FDR control: Application to fMRI data", "Signal sampling and reconstruction", and "Absolute value equations and optimization". Professor of Chern Institute of Mathematics Qi Zhou, research fellow of Chern Institute of Mathematics Qiongling Li, Professor of the Center for Combinatorics of NKU Yongtang Shi and Professors of the School of Mathematical Sciences of NKU Lihua Bai, Xuan Guang and Chunlin Wu each gave a lecture respectively titled "Phase transition and mobility edge", "Nilpotent Higgs bundles and the Hodge metric on the Calabi-Yau moduli", "Metrics analysis and its applications in network science", "Optimal investment and divided under renewal risk model", "Information theory for function calculation" and "On nonconvex regularized models for image and surface restoration problems".
