On September 9, Nankai University held a symposium in celebration of the 38th Teachers' Day. Three generations of NKU teachers gathered in remembrance of Professor Shiing-Shen Chern, a great geometer of the 20th Century, and shared their thoughts on 100-year-old NKU's good traditions and their life pursuit of serving the country through scientific research and education.

President of Nankai University Yulu Chen attended and addressed the symposium. Kexin Yang, executive deputy secretary of the CPC Nankai University Committee, Lei Wang, vice president of Nankai University, Mo-Lin Ge and Weiping Zhang, members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professors at Chern Institute of Mathematics, were present at the symposium. The symposium was hosted by Kexin Yang.

Before the symposium started, representatives of teachers and students of Nankai University laid flowers at the Memorial Tombstone of Shiing-Shen Chern which locates right beside the Shiing-Shen Building.

Professor Shiing-Shen Chern is internationally recognized as a renowned mathematician, educator and one of the greatest geometers in the 20th century. His pioneering contributions had an enormous influence on research of differential geometry, topology and especially global differential geometry, therefore he is also known as the "father of global differential geometry". Shiing-Shen Chern devoted his whole life to mathematics. He cultivated a large number of outstanding mathematicians well-known at home and abroad, making great contributions to the development of Chinese and even world mathematical education. In 1985 Professor Chern founded Nankai Institute of Mathematics (currently the Chern Institute of  Mathematics) . It follows the guideline proposed by Professor Chern: based at Nankai, serving the country, and embracing the world. By inviting internationally renowned mathematicians to deliver lectures and holding international academic conferences, it has cultivated a large number of excellent mathematical scholars and has won great reputation for Nankai mathematics in China and worldwide.

After the symposium, representatives of teachers visited the Shiing-Shen Chern Photo Exhibition, which was on display in remembrance of Shiing-Shen Chern as last year marks the 110th anniversary of his birth. The exhibition was divided into eight parts chronologically, showing Professor Chern's extraordinary achievements, devotion to the country and his charming personality through vivid images.
