Shaoming Guo, a scholar of harmonic analysis, was recently appointed as a full-time Chair Professor of Chern Institute of Mathematics (CIM), Nankai University. The joining of this 36-year-old outstanding scholar is believed to breathe new vitality into NKU's mathematical research. Currently he is working on writing a textbook on the introduction of modern harmonic analysis, for the course "Topics in Harmonic Analysis" that he plans to offer for senior undergraduates and graduate students.
Graduated with his Bachelor's degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Shaoming Guo received his doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of Bonn in 2015, and then pursued his postdoctoral research at Indiana University Bloomington and MSRI, Berkeley, California. In 2018 he was a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since 2019 he had been a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, starting as an assistant professor and later associate professor. In 2023, he was selected for national high-level talent program.
Shaoming Guo has long been engaged in research on harmonic analysis and related fields such as analytic number theory, geometric measure theory and partial differential equation. His representative works include: in 2019, he worked with his collaborator to provide an affirmative answer to the Vinogradov's conjecture in dimensions higher than one; in 2021, together with collaborators, he gave an elementary proof of Vinogradov's conjecture in one dimension; in 2023, he and his collaborators jointly proved all the optimal Fourier decoupling inequalities for quadratic forms in Fourier decoupling theory.
Shaoming Guo shared his latest teaching plan and outlook for mathematical research in the interview. At the moment, he is writing a textbook on harmonic analysis for senior undergraduates and graduate students, with the purpose of helping them quickly get started and gain a deeper understanding of this important branch of mathematics.
He mentioned that, as a key field in mathematics, harmonic analysis has found in recent years its important applications in analytic number theory, geometric measure theory, partial differential equation, Diophantine approximations, homogeneous dynamical systems and some other fields. Moreover, tools for researching harmonic analysis have been constantly updated these years, as those for combinatorics, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry have also played major roles in the research of the central problems of harmonic analysis.
Apart from writing the textbook, Shaoming Guo also plans to organize a summer school this year to read the latest research articles with graduate students of NKU and other universities, with the intention of further developing their research interest and depth in related fields.
Shaoming Guo has quickly adapted himself to NKU's culture and pace of life. "I've already found myself table tennis partners!" he said excitedly. And he hopes to settle in this new environment as soon as possible, so that he can focus on his teaching and research work.
CIM warmly welcomed the joining of Shaoming Guo with expectation that in the future he will help the Institute make more scientific innovation and breakthrough. As an important part of NKU's mathematics discipline, CIM has always been working on nurturing high-level mathematical talents and conducting high-level mathematical research.
NKU attaches great importance to the training and introduction of mathematical talents. In recent years, by providing positions such as Chair Professor, it has attracted many leading scholars at home and abroad to join.
