On November 22, 2024, Shicheng Wang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at the School of Mathematical Sciences of Peking University, delivered a Chern Lecture entitled "Orientation and Chirality" at Chern Institute of Mathematics (CIM). Before the lecture, Chengming Bai, Vice President of Nankai University, met with Shicheng Wang at CIM.
Shicheng Wang's main research focus lies in low-dimensional topology. In this lecture, starting with some common phenomena in our daily life and connections between things, he naturally brought it to mathematics and put forward new questions and ideas. He then shared with the audience the latest research on orientation and chirality in pure mathematics and applied mathematics, and introduced its potential influences on other subjects such as materials science, chemistry and medicine.
Explaining profound theories in simple words, Professor Wang showed in his talk the preciseness of mathematics and the value of mathematical research in practical applications. At the end of the lecture, Professor Wang patiently answered questions for teachers and students, and spoke highly of the NKU students' thinking and insights. Providing an opportunity for students to learn more about geometric topology, this lecture is also a good chance for the audience to gain a better understanding of mathematical research.
