NKU Chair Professor selected as New Cornerstone Investigator
2025-12-24 17:04

The 2025 list of New Cornerstone Investigators was announced on November 24, naming 35 outstanding scientists. The New Cornerstone Investigator Program is one of China's premier nonprofit and independent funding initiatives that focuses on original innovation and encourages free exploration. Shaoming Guo, a Chair Professor at Nankai University, was named one of the three New Cornerstone Investigators in the research fields of Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science for 2025.

Shaoming Guo is a Chair Professor and PhD supervisor at the Chern Institute of Mathematics, Nankai University. Graduated with his Bachelor's degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Shaoming Guo received his doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of Bonn in 2015, and then pursued his postdoctoral research at Indiana University Bloomington and MSRI, Berkeley, California. In 2018 he was a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since 2019 he had been a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, starting as an assistant professor and later associate professor. In 2024, he joined the Chern Institute of Mathematics at Nankai University as a full-time Chair Professor.

Shaoming Guo specializes in harmonic analysis and related fields, including analytic number theory, geometric measure theory, and partial differential equations. His representative works include: in 2019, he worked with his collaborator to provide an affirmative answer to the Vinogradov's conjecture in dimensions higher than one; in 2023, he and his collaborators jointly proved all the optimal Fourier decoupling inequalities for quadratic forms in Fourier decoupling theory; in 2024, he proved with his collaborators the restriction projection conjecture in geometric measure theory.

According to the official website of the New Cornerstone Science Foundation, the New Cornerstone Investigator Program is a new type of basic research funding initiative that focuses on original innovation, encourages free exploration, and has a public welfare nature. It pledges to provide a select group of exceptional scientists with stable, long-term support for discovery research that is of profound importance to humankind. In keeping with its 'People, not Projects' motto, the Program aims to facilitate exceptional scientists to explore new phenomena, discover scientific breakthroughs, and develop new fields.

The Program funds two major research fields, Mathematics & Physical Sciences and Biological & Biomedical Sciences, and encourages interdisciplinary research. The Program is guided by scientists, and a Scientific Committee makes the key decisions during review and selection of applicants. Dr. Shi Yigong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Westlake University, serves as Chair of the Scientific Committee. As of 2025, a total of 139 outstanding scientists have been selected as New Cornerstone Investigators.
