The CIM 40th Anniversary Development Forum - Alumni Session was held at Nankai University on October 18. Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, distinguished scholars worldwide from renowned mathematical research institutes, as well as teachers and students of Nankai University, gathered at the forum to honor the memory of Professor Shiing-Shen Chern, and review the 40 years of the development history of the Chern Institute of Mathematics (CIM).
The Alumni Session was attended and addressed by Qingshan Yang, Secretary of CPC Nankai University Committee; Zixin Hou, former President of Nankai University; Mo-Lin Ge, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at the CIM; Yiming Long, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at the CIM; Changpu Sun, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at the Graduate School of the China Academy of Engineering Physics; Fuquan Fang, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Capital Normal University; Changping Wang, former President of Fujian Normal University; Chengming Bai, Vice President of Nankai University and Director of the CIM.
On October 17, 1985, Professor Shiing-Shen Chern founded the Nankai Institute of Mathematics at his alma mater, Nankai University. He aimed to foster a congenial environment for researchers dedicated to mathematics, and to help young scholars appreciate what "good mathematics" is from an early stage in their careers. In 1986, Nobel laureate Chen-Ning Yang was invited by Professor Chern to establish the Theoretical Physics Division, laying a solid international academic foundation for the institute.
Since its founding, the CIM has consistently upheld the guideline proposed by Professor Chern: Based at Nankai, Serving the Country, and Embracing the World. Committed to nurturing home-grown mathematical talents, the institute invites world-renowned mathematicians to give lectures and hosts a series of international academic conferences, earning an outstanding reputation for mathematical research at Nankai both nationwide and globally. Today, the institute has cultivated generations of outstanding talents who have made their mark across various fields of mathematics at home and abroad, with a number of them emerged as leading academic figures of international influence.
